My dog is so sad. He only gets happy when company shows up?

I don't like that he just wants to sulk. He has a new kitty that seems to help a bit, but I just can't get him out of his depression. He does get sad when I am sick (cancer patient) but he's only 3 years old and acting to sad. Any ideas to make him happy??? Things I can do at home please. I do take him to the doggies park and beach every now and then. But it's like a temporary solution. As soon as we leave he gets sad again.

Dogs are very in tune with their owners; he probably knows there's something up when you're sick and it worries him. You might want to try playing with him (toss a ball around or something) as much as you are able to. New toys, new chews, or new treats could perk him up a little bit.

If none of this works, you might want to take him to a vet; animals obviously act differently when they don't feel well, just like people do.

Also, if your situation (financial and personal) allows and he likes other dogs you might consider getting one to keep him company md keep him active. :3
