After someone leaves military service, can/should they still wear their uniform in a wedding?
Just wondering if there are time frames. If someone just got out of the service, did not re-enlist and is getting married - is it OK for them to wear their uniform in a wedding? What if they've been out a few years? Any rules around this?
Watch it when someone cuts and pastes only part of the regulations.
If you just separated from the service and are still "in" due to travel time, you have a reserve commitment or otherwise are still subject to recall and the UCMJ, you can wear the uniform at a wedding. However, if you are totally out and there is no possible way they can grab you back without starting up a draft, such as you fulfilled the entire 8 years of your contract and you did not sign another, then you can not wear the uniform as you are once again a civilian and civilians are not authorized to wear the uniform just because you want too.
Now as far as that cut and paste regulation. Note how it refers to weddings. ""(1) When attending military funerals, memorial services, weddings, inaugurals, and other occasions of ceremony.""
They are talking about MILITARY funerals, memorial services for VETERANS, MILITARY weddings, MILITARY inaugurals (including Presidential) and other MILITARY occasions of ceremony.
If you are attending a MILITARY wedding where either the bride or the groom are a service member and it is being conducted in a military fashion such as with a saber arch done by a MILITARY or ROTC unit then you can wear the uniform. But you can not just throw on the uniform because you got it and you think it looks cool. If you want to continue to wear the uniform for civilian stuff, then stay in the service.
A safe way to ensure you are OK with this is "DO YOU HAVE A MILITARY ID CARD?" If you have an active duty, reserve or retired ID card, then you can wear the uniform pretty liberally. But if you do not have a military ID card then you had better make sure you are attending one of the approved MILITARY functions.
